Louis Pasteur  (December 27, 1822 – September 28, 1895) was a French chemist and microbiologist who was one of the most important founders of medical microbiology.

He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and preventions of diseases. His discoveries reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and he created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax.

His experiments supported the germ theory of disease.

He was best known to the general public for inventing a method to stop milk and wine from causing sickness, a process that came to be called pasteurization.

He is regarded as one of the three main founders of microbiology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch.

Pasteur also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, most notably the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals.

Pasteur saw no conflict between science and Christianity. In fact, he believed that ‘science brings men nearer to God’. [Pasteur (quoted in J.H. Tiner, Louis Pasteur—Founder of Modern Medicine, Mott Media, Milford, Michigan, USA, 1990, p. 90.)]

In his work as a scientist, he perceived evidence of wisdom and design, not randomness and chaos. Pasteur stated that: ‘The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator’. [Pasteur (quoted in J.H. Tiner, Louis Pasteur—Founder of Modern Medicine, Mott Media, Milford, Michigan, USA, 1990, p. 75.)]

Louis Pasteur died on September 28, 1895, after a long and fruitful life. His contributions to science were truly outstanding. His Christian faith sustained him through many trials. He firmly believed in creation, and strongly opposed Darwin’s theory of evolution because it did not fit well with scientific evidence.
